Spring is officially here, and with that brings the bugs. As the weather gets warmer we will start to see more flies and mosquitos, and with them comes painful bites. It is important to not only protect yourself, but your dog as well. Protecting your dog from mosquito bites can be an important step in preventing heartworm in your dog. BUT, be aware of what you use on your dog. Many commercially produced products designed to repel mosquitos from your dog contain powerful chemical-based pesticides and other toxic/carcinogenic ingredients that are very harmful to your dog’s well being. And, never treat your pet with human pest repellant, which contain DEET.
DEET is commonly found in human pest repellant and is effective in warding off mosquitos, but should not be applied to dogs or cats. This chemical is toxic when ingested, and dogs and cats may lick it off and ingest it, potentially resulting in a toxicity. Signs of DEET ingestion are; drooling, wobbly gait, seizures, vomiting and loss of appetite. If your pet has ingested DEET, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Are insecticides found in flea and tick collars, powder and sprays that can result in sever poisoning to dogs and cats. Organophosphate can be absorbed through the skin, respiratory system or the gastrointestinal tract. Once your dog is exposed to organophosphate poisoning symptoms can appear within a few minutes or can take up to several hours, these symptoms include; difficulty breathing, constricted pupils, drooling, vomiting, urinating, diarrhea, depression, muscle weakness, anorexia and seizures. If you suspect your dog has been poisoned call your vet immediately.
