Safe and Happy Halloween: Tips for Pet Owners

Halloween is packed with fun, costumes, parties, trick-or-treating and spooky decorations... BUT for our pets all that fun could cause stress and some of it could actually be a danger for them. Follow the tips below to keep your pet safe so you both can have a happy Halloween!

Keep The Treats Out Of Reach

Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for cats and dogs, and sugar-free candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can cause serious problems in pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

Watch Your Pets Around Decorations

Halloween is known for the festive carved jack-o-lantern, but they can easily be knocked over by your pet and start a fire. Curious kitties are especially at risk of getting burned or singed by a candle flame. Don't let your pets nibble on the pumpkins or decorative corn, although they are considered relatively nontoxic, it can cause stomach discomfort.

Costumes Are Not For Everyone

lifebuzz-27583881   Just like people, there are those who love dressing up and those who don’t. The ASPCA recommends that you don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it, there is no reason to cause unnecessary stress. If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard.  Watch for costumes with capes or other lose hanging pieces that can get caught or twisted as well.   Be sure to have your pet try on the costume before the big night. If he or she seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider a festive bandana instead.

Keep Your Pets Away From The Door

Keep your pets in another room away from the front door during the trick-or-treating. Aside from door dashing, even the most social pets can get frightened by the strange sights and sounds of trick-or-treaters. A scared, or overly excited, pet could accidentally harm a trick-or-treater.

Keep Your Pet Indoors

Unfortunately animals are often targets of cruel tricks or pranks this time of year, these pranks can cause real harm to your beloved pet. The best way to keep your pets safe from these dangers is to keep them inside. If you have outside cats consider bringing them indoors until the holiday hype has passed.

Be Sure Your Pet Is Wearing Their Identification

Pets with tags can be reunited with their owner a lot quicker when found.   Hope you found these tips helpful and not too scary. Putting safety first will ensure that you and your pet will have a happy and healthy Halloween!
